Power Save and Redlands Unified School District

Redlands Unified School District (RUSD) is a California-based school district, serving over 21,000 students. There are 23 schools in the district, ranging from elementary to high schools, and over 1,800 employees. RUSD currently has over 7,000 Windows computers across the district, supported by 75 servers. The main district office connects to all of its schools via fiber point-to-point optic connection.

Problem
Like many school districts, RUSD was mandated to cut costs and realize savings wherever possible. The district did not have an existing power management strategy in place, and therefore manually shutdown their computers every night. Not only was this difficult to control, but because there were no specific reporting features, it was impossible to determine how much unnecessary energy was
being consumed or saved.The Technology Services Coordinator, David Massaro, and the Facilities team attended a Southern California Edison presentation on power management. For schools and other organizations facing shrinking budgets, they learned that a dedicated PC power management solution is an immediate and cost effective way to reduce computer energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Southern California Edison is one of the largest power providers in California and provides rebates to school districts and companies who purchase PC power saving software.

Solution
Recognizing the opportunity to save money with a dedicated PC power management solution, Massaro began researching various solutions. Out of the numerous vendors Massaro examined, Faronics caught his attention. As an already satisfied customer of Faronics Deep Freeze (an instant system restore solution) and Faronics Insight (a classroom management solution), David didn’t hesitate to choose Faronics Power Save as their power management solution of choice.

The PC energy reducing software is now deployed on over 5,500 computers at RUSD. There are two dedicated servers that manage all Power Save PCs in the district’s office, and the software has been configured to ensure the most efficient savings without any end-user disruption.

Faronics Power Save and Caixa Manlleu

Caixa Manlleu is a prosperous, modern financial organization that has been in business for more than 100 years. They have a network of over 100 offices throughout Catalonia and Madrid and hold a seat on the stock exchange where they operate in the national and international financial markets.

Caixa Manlleu has maintained a strong environmental policy for many years. Because of the growing awareness on environmental responsibility, Caixa Manlleu has incorporated the following sustainability principles into its corporate agenda:

  • Promote and inform the people working for Caixa Manlleu, or acting on its behalf, about the environmental policy.
  • Ensure employees and subcontracted personnel understand the environmental impacts generated by Caixa Manlleu activities.
  • Learn about the applicable environmental legislation as well as the compromises that Caixa Manlleu may undertake relating to the environment to guarantee compliance.
  • Develop an environmental management program for continuous improvement and the prevention of contamination.

In line with the environmental policy, the Director of Systems of Caixa Manlleu, Mr. Joan Pi, began searching for a cost saving energy strategy for its network of 500 workstations.

Through Qualiteasy, a Preferred Partner in Spain, Joan familiarized himself with the energy saving software developed by Faronics called Power Save (Power Saving). Caixa Manlleu began testing Power Save during the summer of 2009.

This comprehensive testing was conducted on 68 workstations, each with different saving policies applicable at four different times in the day. Any challenges encountered during testing were resolved with the latest version of Power Save and Faronics Core, the management console for Power Save. One of the main improvements to the product was the ability to keep Power Save tasks active for a specified amount of time. This Active Task feature helped to ensure that these tasks would run on all computers even if some were not initially connected to the network. This improvement helped with the implementation of Power Save at Caixa Manlleu.

The data obtained during the test allowed Qualiteasy to estimate that Caixa Manlleu would achieve a return on investment within six months to a year.

Power Save and the School District of the Chathams

The School District of the Chathams is a regional public school district serving the students of Chatham Borough and Chatham Township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States.They have approximately 500 employees and 3900 students in their district with a total of 58 active servers on the network (21 are physical servers). Roughly half of the physical servers are VMware hosts that run multiple virtual servers while the other half are physical servers because they are not good candidates for virtualization.

Problem
Because energy usage by computers is not itemized individually, many school districts, like the School District of the Chathams, do not realize the extensive amount of electricity used by their PCs. John Abdelmalak, Director of Technology knew that reducing PC energy consumption would save the school district a significant amount of money.

Solution
The school district first learned of Faronics Power Save through direct mail and immediately saw an opportunity. They quickly tried the demo on the workstations and were so impressed by the power consumption reports that they instantly deployed it on all their Windows workstations.“We noticed the product was working as expected immediately. Best of all it has not wasted any time or resources of IT personnel” said Abdelmalak.

One of the key features of Power Save is the ability to personalize and schedule shutdowns. Thanks to this feature, Abdelmalak has now scheduled and customized the majority of the district’s computers to shutdown after two hours of inactivity.

Abdelmalak was also pleased with the service at Faronics. “Dealing with our Faronics sales representative and technical support has always been a positive experience. We appreciate that Faronics takes suggestions from its customers which help create newer and better versions of the product,” said Abdelmalak .“In the nine month time frame that we have used Power Save the software has already been improved considerably.”
